MAKING JUSTICE JUST
Future opportunities for reform
Over the course of the last Victorian Parliament, the Legislative Council Legal and Social Issues Committee chaired by Fiona Patten MP has conducted a number of significant Inquiries into Victoria's criminal justice system. Together, the comprehensive reports released by the Committee contain a wealth of information from service providers, legal experts, and people with lived experience of the justice system, identifying multiple opportunities for concrete reform.
In the wake of the 'law and order decade' and its impacts on the system, we have seen real shifts in community attitudes to criminal justice in recent years, and there are clear opportunities for substantive reform.
This forum will ask: How do we reduce the harm that our justice system is doing? How do we provide better alternatives to prison and help people who have been in the justice system rebuild their lives?
Panel members include: Fiona Patten, MP for Northern Metropolitan Region; Marius Smith, CEO of VACRO; and Rachael Hambleton, Board Member at Flat Out and Senior Strategy and Research Adviser at The Justice Map.
