Event description
Join us for an evening of insight with Brian Fuata, one of Australia’s most compelling and boundary-pushing performance artists, as the fourth guest in our 2025 'Making Of' series.
Through this platform we invite celebrated arts professionals and artists to share their early career explorations, as well as the significant opportunities, processes and decisions that've nurtured their growth in the industry.
Established in Australia’s experimental performance scene (1999-2006) with his autofiction monologues and 20-minute improvisations, Brian Fuata works across visual and live arts via performance, film, installation, email and SMS text, social media and print. His practice in structured improvisation is the ‘mediation of performance’ drawn from reading select physical, social and relational features of a given site and context to manifest his live and digital events.
Fuata will be part of the upcoming 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Yield Strength, curated by Ellie Buttrose, and his work has featured in major exhibitions nationally and internationally.
His enigmatic practice includes the ghost performances (2012-2022) manifested via the low fi donning of a white sheet. Embodied for his award-winning keynote performance for the LiveArt Prize in Finland Kuopio (2019) as well as NIRIN, Biennale of Sydney (2020), a number of ghost performances informed the epic installation Errantucation (mist opportunities) for the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2020-22) later acquired by the museum and were briefly resurrected for Seoul Museum of Art (2024). In email Brian innovated a new stage to extend his interest in language and performing the self, exploring epistolary media as a performative act. Brian’s email performances have arrived in the inboxes of his ever-evolving contact list of family, friends, lovers, and professional colleagues intermittently; also curated for major institutions Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (2014); Performa Biennial NY (2015); and Cement Fondu Sydney (2024).
