About the workshop: 

Having a home of your own is something most adults aspire to. It creates opportunities for greater independence, choice, self-expression, and personal growth. Having a secure home is also an important part of ensuring someone’s long term safety and stability.

For people with disability, however, moving out of the family home can bring additional challenges. It can sometimes feel easier, safer, or less complicated to stay at home, and families often feel uncertain about how to make the transition successful. Too often, we underestimate what people with disability can achieve and become overwhelmed by the planning and decisions involved.

Whether you're excited about the idea of having your own home, feeling uncertain about leaving the family home, or supporting a family member to explore their options, this workshop will provide information and guidance to help you plan for the future with confidence.

Participants will gain practical information, hear about different pathways to independent living, and learn strategies for planning a successful transition that reflects the goals, choices, and circumstances of the individual.

Join us to:

• Discover practical first steps you can take, even while still living at home.

• Learn proven frameworks for navigating challenges, such as choosing the right housing option, managing supports within a budget, and maintaining safety and wellbeing.

About the Presenter: Dianne Mandeville

Dianne Mandeville is the parent of a 39-year-old son with complex disabilities. Alongside working towards a secure and meaningful future for him, she has supported many families and individuals over the years in envisioning and planning for inclusive lives and individualised living arrangements.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop will be relevant to people with developmental disabilities, their families and supporters as they think through how they can move into and thrive in a home they can call their own. There will be a limited number of tickets available for workers.

What do I need to participate?

CRU will be using Zoom meetings as a platform. To participate you will need:

• a computer, tablet or smart phone with internet access 

• speakers/sound

• a microphone and video camera are not essential but will be helpful for your participation

• log-in details will be sent to participants who register a few days prior to the event
