Description

Bassist Michael Manring, flutist Larry Kassin, and pianist John R. Burr return to The Back Room for an afternoon of original compositions, masterful improvisation, and musical storytelling.

Each a highly accomplished musician with a distinctive style, the three bring together decades of performance experience and exceptional instrumental skill. Their music moves between chamber jazz, folk, rock, blues, world, and classical influences, with intricate arrangements and spontaneous exchanges that draw listeners into the stories unfolding through their instruments.

Moving seamlessly between solos, duos, and trios, Manring, Kassin, and Burr build on one another's musical ideas, creating performances that are technically remarkable, emotionally engaging, and full of unexpected turns. It's a musical partnership that continues to offer something fresh, even to those who have heard them many times before.

Featuring

Michael Manring | Electric Bass

Internationally recognized as one of the most innovative electric bassists of his generation, Michael Manring has expanded the expressive possibilities of his instrument through extraordinary technique and musical imagination. His performances combine technical mastery with emotional depth, earning him admiration from musicians and audiences worldwide.

"Every instrument has its technical innovators, and its pioneers who explore the emotional and expressive potential. Very rarely are the two combined in the same person—John Coltrane did it for the tenor sax, Keith Jarrett for the piano, and Michael Manring for the bass guitar." — Bass Player Magazine

Larry Kassin | Flute

Flutist and composer Larry Kassin has performed with world-class musicians for decades, developing a distinctive style influenced by jazz, classical, and experimental traditions. His collaborations include recording two albums with The Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek and poet Michael McClure, as well as contributing to The Africa Project. Since 1981, Kassin has also produced San Francisco's Noe Valley Music Series, bringing exceptional live music to Bay Area audiences.

"Larry Kassin exhibits an awareness of tonal possibilities in the tradition of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the authoritativeness that sometimes recalls Hubert Laws, and the freedom of expression of Paul Horn." — Chicago Reader

"Ray Manzarek and Michael McClure are brilliantly abetted by Larry Kassin on flute throughout the album (Piano Poems)." — Beat Scene

John R. Burr | Piano

A familiar and much-admired presence at The Back Room and throughout the Bay Area, pianist John R. Burr is celebrated for his brilliant technique, musical versatility, and expressive playing. Equally at home in jazz and folk traditions, Burr has performed with acclaimed artists including Maria Muldaur, Alison Brown, Paul McCandless, and Kathy Kallick. His ability to move effortlessly between musical styles makes him a natural collaborator in the trio's adventurous performances.

"Pianist extraordinaire John R. Burr has the most sparkling style since former Allman brother–turned Rolling Stone hired hand Chuck Leavell." — Philadelphia Weekly
