Event description

Audition of [Kitāb Birr Al-Wālidayn] by Imam Al-Bukhārī with ʾIjāzah

The Unique [Kitāb Birr Al-Wālidayn] by Imām Al-Bukhārī

A recently published monograph Kitāb Birr al-Wālidayn (Filial Piety), by Imām Abū ʿAbdillāh Muḥammad ʾibn Ismāʿil ʾibn Ibrāhīm ʾibn al-Mughīrah al-Bukhārī (d. 256 AH), narrated by Abū Bakr Muḥammad ʾibn Aḥmad ʾibn Dallūyah al-Naysābūrī (d. 319 AH), has been critically edited, reviewed, and printed by various publishers in the past few years.

This book was published for the first time based on the unique manuscript housed in the library of the esteemed scholar, Al-Hāfiẓ Sayyid ʿAbdul Ḥayy al-Kattānī (may Allah have mercy on him).

The book contains more than seventy narrations, embellished with chains of transmission. It is a dedicated monograph by the legendary polymath Imām al-Bukhārī on the ḥadīths pertaining to filial piety. It was among the texts transmitted by Al-Ḥāfiẓ ʾIbn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī (d. 852 AH) through audition, as noted in his works Al-Majmaʿ al-Muʾassas and Al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras.

The credit for rediscovering this manuscript of our glorious heritage, after scholars had despaired of finding it, goes to the distinguished ḥadīth scholar Sheikh Muḥammad ʿAbdul Ḥayy al-Kattānī. He found it in the Levant, purchased it, and placed it in his comprehensive library until it was finally made accessible in 1430 AH (2008) through the efforts of Dr. Aḥmed Shawqī Binbin.
