Aspect Film Club is a community film club for people of colour.

For October, Aspect Film Club presents MĀRAMA, a new Māori horror film.

1859. Mary Stevens (Ariāna Osborne), a young Māori woman, is summoned from New Zealand to North Yorkshire by a mysterious note. To survive, she becomes the governess Mary at Hawkser Manor under the seemingly benevolent eye of Sir Nathaniel Cole (Toby Stephens), a charming landowner whose fortune was forged in the South Seas. Cole speaks her language and insists he can help her. But the walls of his home are hung with Māori taonga, and by night Mary finds herself haunted by memories that are not her own. Mary realises she must face a bloody reckoning in a bid to discover the truth.

DETAILS:

Arrive from 6pm to mingle and grab popcorn or wine from the venue. Screening will start around 6:15pm and the film runs for 89 minutes. Dressing up OPTIONAL but ENCOURAGED :)

Afterwards, you're welcome to stay and chat about the film. Stick around for mingling and conversation, with optional prompts to guide discussion.

Don't be shy to come alone! Everyone is very friendly, and the hosts will be around to say hello.

Aspect Film Club is designed for people of colour to connect with fellow film lovers and watch cinema from around the world. Allies are kindly requested to respect the intentions of the space.

Our mission is to intentionally build and foster community. We choose to centre people of colour in an effort to move away from the whiteness/white sensibilities that can dominate arts communities and conversations. We want to develop into a place for you to regularly catch up with friends, connect with new people, watch a movie on a big screen, and celebrate cinema.
