Mardi Gras Collage Workshop with the Sydney Collage Society
Event description
Join us for a vibrant and celebratory Mardi Gras-themed collage workshop, led by Sydney-based collage artist Simon Welsh and hosted by Kubi Vasak of the Sydney Collage Society. This special workshop embraces the spirit of pride, identity, and self-expression, channelling the power of collage to explore themes of gender, movement, and queer history.
What You’ll Do
This 2.5-hour immersive session will introduce you to contemporary collage techniques, whether you're a first-time cutter or a seasoned pro. Simon Welsh—known for his striking, exploratory approach to figurative collage—will guide you through colour, composition, texture, and balance, helping you create a bold, expressive work that reflects the energy of the Mardi Gras.
You'll have access to an extensive collection of vintage magazines, photography books, and ephemera carefully sourced by the Sydney Collage Society—think high-fashion editorials, queer archives, and iconic pop culture imagery. Expect a playful, hands-on session, where experimentation is key, and every cut-and-paste tells a story.
