Event description
MARIUS, Marcel Pagnol
In French with English surtitles
Resume: Marius, the son of César, owner of the Marine bar in front of the port of Marseille, is torn between his love for Fanny, the little shellfish seller, and his desire to go to sea, to travel the world...
When Marcel Pagnol, in 1929, had Marius performed on a Parisian stage, he probably did not suspect that his characters would become as famous as Harpagon or Monsieur Jourdain of Molière.
"Marius" is a play first performed in March 1929 at the Théâtre de Paris and adapted to film in 1931.
Theatre and French lovers will be transported to a unique universe where the language sings like the cicadas of Provence.
This play is very important to me. It brings me back to my roots and childhood. And I am so grateful to be able to share this through art and theatre with the group of actors and all of you here in Western Australia!

_____________________________________________________
Marcel Pagnol (1895–1974) was a French playwright, novelist, and filmmaker known for bringing the vibrant life of Provence to the stage and screen. Born in Aubagne, near Marseille, Pagnol was deeply influenced by southern France's landscapes, customs, and dialects, which became central themes in his work. His plays, such as Marius, Fanny, and César, are celebrated for their blend of humour and emotion, capturing the essence of Provencal life.
Pagnol transitioned into filmmaking in the 1930s, becoming a pioneer in French cinema with works like La femme du boulanger and Manon des Sources. These films further showcased his ability to depict the richness of rural life. His work transcended national borders, earning him international acclaim.
In recognition of his literary contributions, Pagnol was elected to the prestigious Académie Française at fifty-one on April 4, 1946. His legacy endures as one of France’s most beloved storytellers, immortalising the soul of Provence through laughter and emotion.
"Marcel Pagnol will forever continue to speak to us because it is a classic that tells us as we are, entangled in the ties of blood, the ties of the heart.
The temptation to leave, young people always feel it, and it is always as complicated to love, to take responsibility..."
