Mason Park - Bird Sketching and Drawing Workshop
Event description
Attendees: All Ages
Come and explore the fascinating world of native birdlife through a hands-on sketching workshop, as
part of the public artwork Where Song Began by Sydney artist Nuha Saad. This interactive session will
be held on-site at the beautiful Mason Park Wetlands, a habitat teeming with native birds that inspire
art and creativity.
Birds have long been celebrated in art for their beauty, symbolism, and vibrant presence across cultures.
Whether you’re young or old, the birdlife in our community brings us all together—something especially
true in the Homebush area, home to a rich variety of feathered friends. Nuha Saad’s Where Song Began
draws inspiration from the Mason Park Wetlands and its local birds, and aims to create small ‘stepping
stone’ micro-sites for birds to rest and reconnect with nature.
What to Expect:
Special insights from a Local Aboriginal Elder who will share the cultural significance of birds to the local Wangal people and to First Nations communities more broadly. It’s an amazing opportunity to learn how birds connect to the land and culture.
Bird Talk with Dr. Andrew Huggett: This will be an engaging talk by ornithologist Dr. Andrew Huggett, who will guide you through the local bird species that call the wetlands home. Ask questions, share your knowledge, and deepen your understanding of the birdlife in our community.
Sketching Session with Mimi Tong and Nuha Saad: Following the talks, join Sydney artist Mimi Tong for a guided drawing session. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, you’ll have the chance to create your own bird-inspired sketches, while being supported by Nuha Saad, the artist behind the Where Song Began artwork.
Why Participate:
Contribute to Public Art: Your bird sketches could become part of the final Where Song Began installation near Park Road in Homebush, or even be featured in a group display at the Strathfield Library!
