About this Masterclass: Understanding the party pre-selection process

Do you know how party pre-selection happens in Australia? It’s not a well understood process for anyone who isn’t a member of a political party. The easiest explanation is that it’s the process by which a registered political party chooses its endorsed candidate for a given electorate. The pre-selection process is often seen as the campaign you run before you run your election campaign!!

Women for Election has secured two expert speakers, one each from the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal Party of Australia, to provide you with insights into the pre-selection process for each of their parties and how you can position yourself best within it. This is a rare opportunity to hear from “insiders” on a process that is frequently shrouded in secrecy and ask them questions to help you on your political journey!

Meet our speakers:

Jennifer Light
Jennifer has been the National Assistant Secretary at the Australian Labor Party since the start of 2021 and she ran the ‘Target Seats' unit during the 2022 Federal Election. First joining the Labor Party as a university student at Sydney University, Jennifer has been active in various parts of the ALP, and she’s held several different positions within the party. Jennifer has over a decade of campaign experience, including as a campaign organiser running marginal seat campaigns across Australia, whilst also working in Federal Parliament as a staffer for several years. Jennifer also has experience working in the private sector with Ogilvy between 2019 and 2022.

Jacqui Munro
Jacqui Munro is the recently elected President of the Women's Council and Women's Vice-President of the Liberal Party of Australia (NSW Division). Jacqui’s career has spanned local to national campaigns that engage and change minds, from the public to policy makers. She has worked for political heavyweights including Malcolm Turnbull, Gladys Berejiklian and Dr Kerryn Phelps, and contributed a centre-right perspective as media adviser to the 2017 Marriage Equality campaign. Today she works with corporate clients and advocacy bodies to craft creative and incisive movements that shift the dial in public conversations as the Senior Consultant in Public Affairs at global PR and campaigns agency, Red Havas.

In 2019 Jacqui ran for Federal Parliament to advocate for environmental protection, small business and mental health. She was the NSW Liberal Party's youngest woman candidate.

On the side, Jacqui is a regular commentator in broadcast media and print, with the goal of sharing considered, fresh insight into the public policy issues of the day.
