Masterclass: Autistic Children Grow Up To Be Autistic Adults
Event description
Reframing Autism invites you to join this masterclass led by Dr Sandra Thom-Jones that focusses on supporting Autistic children and Autistic adults to feel understood, accepted and valued. Â
The session will cover many topics, including why autism statistics are confusing and misleading, the myth that children grow out of autism, masking and camouflaging, how our strengths and challenges play out as Autistic children and as Autistic adults, how you (and we) can support our strengths and challenges as Autistic children and as Autistic adults. Â
While this session is primarily aimed at parents and carers of Autistic children, other family members and supporters may also benefit from attending. Autistic teens may also wish to attend the session with a parent or caregiver. Professionals supporting Autistic children and young people are encouraged to consider registering for the sister professional development workshop that Sandra is also presenting for us in November.Â
Dr Sandra Thom-Jones (she/her) is an Autistic woman and the mother of two Autistic adult sons. She is an academic, author, artisan, and advocate for the inclusion of Autistic people in all aspects of society. Sandra is the author of Growing in to Autism (MUP, 2022). Sandra has written a range of research publications about autism over the course of her career and held senior university leadership positions. She now works as a Consultant, providing a range of personalised services through her website Autistic Professor.  Sandra provides services to support Autistic people and their families and friends, with a particular focus on Autistic adults and services for workplaces, educational institutions and other organisations that want to create more inclusive and supportive environments for Autistic people.Â
Please note: this Masterclass is not an introduction to Autism, and a level of knowledge about Autism and neurodiversity will be assumed. For parents, we recommend that you undertake Reframing Autism's introductory workshop Neurodiversity, Autism and the joy of parenting differently wired children before enrolling in Masterclass opportunities.
A link to the Zoom workshop will be emailed to you prior to the event.
If you are unable to attend this Masterclass at the scheduled time, please note that it will be recorded. A link (valid for 30 days after the event) will be sent to all attendees the next business day after the Masterclass concludes, so that you may watch it at a time that is suitable for you.
Ticket sales close 5pm Friday 24th November 2023 (AEDT).
Did you know? If your child has an NDIS plan that includes a budget line for parent education, and you are plan- or self-managed, you may be able to claim your registration costs for Reframing Autism events from your child’s NDIS funding.
