Masterclass: Gross National Happiness with Julia Kim

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Dr Julia Kim is a medical doctor, global public health expert and the Program Director at the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Centre in Bhutan*. GNH is a holistic and sustainable approach to development, founded in Bhutan, which balances material and non-material values through a thoughtful and practical policy and decision-making framework.

In this unique masterclass Julia will present the personal, philosophical and spiritual foundations of the GNH framework, allowing us to better understand the social and cultural context of this next economy thinking. Julia will then present a workshop on the GNH framework, including a deep-dive into the four pillars:

  • Good Governance
  • Sustainable Socio-economic Development
  • Preservation and Promotion of Culture
  • Environmental Conservation

Followed by the nine GNH domains:

  • Living Standards
  • Education
  • Health, Environment
  • Community Vitality
  • Time-Use
  • Psychological Well-Being
  • Good Governance
  • Cultural Resilience

Finally, we will apply the GNH lens to our own professional and personal lives, utilising the GNH screening tool in a practical, engaging and illuminating exercise.

Ultimately, we will ask what can we learn and apply from GNH in our own context? How can we draw lessons from the Bhutanese experience to deepen our understanding of our own system and to support the acceleration to the next economy?

This masterclass will be intimate, participatory and engaging. Whilst no preparation is formally required, we will highly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the GNH framework as presented here.

Places are strictly limited so we apologies in advance for disappointment.

Our masterclasses are designed as deep-dive exercises that give you an opportunity to explore and apply concepts and theories from the next economy. Our masterclasses are workshops not lectures and as such we always recommend watching associated TED talks or reading associated articles before attending.
