Shared Value Masterclasses

The masterclasses provide an education pathway for participants to build a deeper understanding of shared value theory and application by exploring real-world case studies. In our 2022 series, we strengthen the HBS academic underpinning of shared value theory, by incorporating HBS case studies and seminal articles – drawing out shared value principles and connecting the theory to the practice with the help of relevant company protagonists who can provide further insight, regional context and shared value work in progress.

Masterclass Three: Partnering for Systems Change
Led by IAG's Executive Manager of Safer Communities Ramana James, this third session will explore the important role of partnerships in informing shared value strategy and design, and how shared value is critical to enable systems change. You will hear about IAG’s Sustainability & Safer Communities model, and how shared value has helped to guide their approach to partnerships as a powerful way to bring the root cause of the issue into focus and influence systems level change. Joining in conversation with Ramana will be one of IAG's key partners, the Australian Red Cross's Head of Emergency Services, Andrew Coghlan.

This session will help to understand:

  • The principles and basic elements of shared value partnerships;
  • Why shared value can be most powerful when addressing systems change;
  • The processes to identify the right partners and bring the root cause of the issue into focus for your organisation through effective partnerships;
  • The role of partners, obstacles for business and the cost and timing of truly creating systems change.


To ensure you come equipped to get the most out of the masterclass, participants will:

  • Establish a foundational understanding of shared value with access to 30 minute interactive eModule 
  • Receive case study materials
  • Participate in pre-session discussion group (9.00am - 9.45am, immediately prior to masterclass)
  • Have plenty of opportunities to ask experts and practitioners questions in the masterclass.

Expert Teacher: Ramana James, Executive General Manager, Safer Communities, IAG

Ramana has a long career in sustainability, ESG and shared value. Previous to IAG he led sustainability and shared value teams across the telecommunication and property industries with Vodafone and Stockland. He has experience working across Europe and Asia on sustainability and climate change and has extensive experience in developing integrated and embedded approaches to sustainability that support strategic priorities and commercial success of organisations. As the Executive General Manager of Safer Communities at IAG, Ramana now leads a diverse team that is responsible for developing, executing and enabling IAG’s organisational wide sustainability, safer communities and shared value activity. The team have a strong focus on executing on IAG’s purpose of ‘making your world a safer place’ and supporting commercial opportunities through this work. Ramana has previously been recognised as a ‘Shared value trailblazer’ at the BOSS Magazine shared value awards and was a Co-Chair of the Coordinating Working Group for the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative. Ramana is also the Course Facilitator for the Centre for Social Impact UNSW's Creating Shared Value course.

Andrew brings over 20 years’ experience in the emergency management sector. As Head of Emergency Services, Andrew is responsible for overseeing Red Cross’ national Emergency Services function. Andrew has played a pivotal role in coordinating the Red Cross response to a number of major emergencies and disasters, including Cyclone Larry (2006), the Black Saturday Victorian Bushfires (2009) and Queensland Floods and Cyclone Yasi (2011). Prior to joining Red Cross, Andrew was the National Recovery Consultant with Emergency Management Australia, providing advice to both State and Federal governments following a range of emergencies and playing a key role in coordinating recovery assistance to Australians impacted by events such as the Boxing Day 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
