Resonance in Motion: James Batchelor in choreographic dialogue with Tanja Liedtke

In this workshop, participants will get to know the choreographer James Batchelor who will introduce participants to the research and choreographic ideas behind the new work Resonance, premiering as part of IDEA’25.

Resonance exists in a curious dialogue with Tanja Liedtke’s legacy—exploring her groundbreaking works Twelfth Floor (2004) and Construct (2007), and her appointment as Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company at age 29—while inviting new creative trajectories to unfold. Liedtke’s sudden passing in 2007 left an indelible mark on the dance community, and this work responds to that resonance with fresh insight and movement.

Following a brief introduction to the research and framing of the project, James will share choreographic improvised scores that offer expansive embodied investigations of history, memory and place.

About James Batchelor

James Batchelor is a choreographer from Ngunnawal Country (Canberra) whose practice spans choreography, research, and teaching. His work investigates the body as a tool for inquiry—mapping, sensing, and measuring space through choreographic form. Grounded in repetition, spatial elasticity, and rhythmic subtlety, his performances create immersive, contemplative environments that invite audiences into expanded experiences of time and perception.

Previous productions including Shortcuts to Familiar Places, Deepspace and Hyperspace have toured extensively to contexts such as Dance Massive (Melbourne), MONA (Hobart), Tanz im August (Berlin), Impulstanz (Vienna) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).

A defining experience was a two-month scientific expedition aboard the RV Investigator in the Antarctic Ocean, where he developed a unique approach to the body as a form of experimental cartography. This spirit of cross-disciplinary curiosity continues to shape his research-driven practice.

Alongside touring, James is developing a pedagogy that integrates somatic awareness, interpretation, and access, working with youth and pre-professional dancers nationwide.
