    Event description

Join us for an exclusive opportunity to enhance your vocal teaching skills with internationally acclaimed voice teacher, Chris Johnson. This series of workshops is designed with both the early career and experienced voice teacher in mind, with tools to empower CCM singing voice practice and pedagogy. Through these events, you will gain insights into balancing the scientific with the experiential so as to approach vocal blocks from many different angles.

Both of these events are interactive, designed to be attended in person.

    Dates and Locations
Adelaide, SA: Developing a Training Toolbox of Voice Building Techniques
    Date: Sunday 11th August
    Time: 10am-5pm (ACST)
Location: Tabor Institute of Music, 181 Goodwood Rd, Millswood SA 5034
Description: Voice building can sound to many like a muscular thing. Make it stronger, and it won’t fail you. But, this muscle centric idea can often lead to burnout as the burden on the vocal folds or larynx can be too high. However, a more flexible and safe voice building option involves synergising the vocal folds with vocal tract shape for a powerful output with much reduced effort. This approach can also allow breath and voice to be managed indirectly through energy and sensations of sound. Expect us to practically explore areas like placement, mix, belt, basic registers, resonance and emotion from this viewpoint… all of which you can take directly into the studio!

Hobart, TAS: Movement and Vocal Assessment: Using the Body to Assess and Resolve Vocal Trouble
    Date: Sunday 18th August
    Time: 10am-5pm (AEST)
Location: Fahan School, 1 Fisher Lane, Sandy Bay TAS 7005
Description: Movement serves many purposes. One is how it alters the relationship between muscles and bones (and posture), and how that then directly alters vocal results. We can use this approach to understand how and why singers are struggling, and how we might resolve these issues through a process of physical assessment. The result is that we can often discover that a problem we’ve been trying to resolve vocally, has its solution in movement…. And that becomes a revelation for most teachers who bring in this approach. Movement also allows us to reinforce vocal outcomes, because gesture and voice are so closely linked in the brain. That means we can use it to not only assess common singing roadblocks, but also continue to develop singers vocal abilities. In this workshop, Chris will give you his complete process for assessing voices in this way, which is almost instantly applicable in your singing lessons. Due to the influential nature of the body on the voice, you will also see stark improvement in some of your singers immediately… and enjoy the excitement in the room when it happens.

      About Chris Johnson
West End leads, backing vocalists, major labels artists and vocal coaches all put their trust in Chris to take good care of their instruments. Has even been awarded a gold disc for his input on commercial studio projects.

Chris also thoroughly enjoys the work he does with singing teachers all over the world. Through his training company TeachVoice.com and his ‘Evolve’ singing teacher program, he helps coaches to up-skill and navigate the overwhelming amount of pedagogical options today.

He has presented on these pedagogical principles internationally at the Pan American Vocology Association, British Voice Association, ANATS, Vocology In Practice, AOTOS, and NATS (US).

In compliment to coaching, Chris has trained in laryngeal manual therapies and studied extensively with scientists in vocal acoustics, physical and somatic therapy, and laryngology. Through his popular podcast and blog, The Naked Vocalist, he has also had the opportunity to connect and share with many progressive voice researchers and pedagogues.

All this rests on a 15 years stint on the road as a professional performer, which allows Chris to understand the demands and pressure of a pro schedule on singers today.
