Mastering mould-making and casting for artists
Event description
Part 1: Mastering Mould Making (Morning Session)
Begin by selecting an object from my library of unusual, stylish, and conversation-worthy forms — each chosen for its sculptural potential and ability to challenge your skills. This will be the starting point for creating a professional-quality silicone mould.
We’ll work through the principles and practice of mould making: how to capture fine detail, build moulds that last, and match the right method to the right object. Along the way, you’ll pick up both foundational techniques and subtle problem-solving skills that separate good moulds from great ones.
You’ll learn:
· How to assess and prepare an object for moulding
· What to look for in materials and tools (and when to adapt the rules)
· Mixing and pouring silicone for maximum detail and minimum waste
· Trimming, seaming, and troubleshooting during demoulding
You’ll leave with a set of reusable moulds, plus the confidence and know-how to take on larger, more complex projects in your own studio.
Lunch Break (Light refreshments provided* — BYO lunch)
Part 2: From Mould to Masterpiece – Polyurethane Casting for Artists (Afternoon Session)
With your freshly made moulds ready, we’ll move straight into polyurethane casting — exploring both opaque and translucent finishes to give your pieces depth, impact, and versatility.
We’ll work cleanly and efficiently with polyurethane, trialling pigment pastes and alcohol inks to create everything from bold, solid colours to layered, subtle effects. You’ll learn how to work within curing times, achieve smooth edges straight from the mould, and finish your work to a professional standard.
You’ll learn:
· Selecting the right polyurethane type for your design and finish goals
· Accurate measuring, mixing, and timing for consistent results
· Colouring techniques using pigment pastes and alcohol inks
· Pouring methods for clean edges and minimal post-finishing
· Sanding, polishing, and sealing for a gallery-ready surface
By the end of the session, you’ll take home finished castings in your own custom colours, and the technical understanding to keep creating with confidence in your own studio.
