Mastering Multichannel Signs - Enhancing Clarity & Expression
Description
Session description
Multichannel signs are an important feature of BSL. Handshape, movement, facial expression, body movement and space can work together to express several elements of meaning within a single construction. Recognising and producing these forms is important for clear and natural BSL.
Led by Deaf linguist and trainer Gavin Lilley, this practical workshop explores how multichannel signs work and how they can be used in live interpreting and prepared translation. We will examine examples where meaning is conveyed through several channels at once, and consider difficulties that arise when translating English source messages into BSL.
Through demonstrations, analysis, discussion and practical exercises, participants will practise recognising multichannel information, trying different constructions and considering how their choices affect clarity and expression.
