Matariki Ride - Community Bike Ride 21 June 2025
Event description
Matariki Ride – A Celebration of Light and Renewal!
Join us for a special end-of-day ride in honour of Matariki, the Māori New Year. Starting from the Dinosaur Park on the Wānaka lakefront at 3:30pm, we’ll follow the cycle-lanes along the lake, up Aubrey Road to Kelly’s Flat Reserve, then along the new cycle lanes past Wānaka Primary and MAC, through Lismore Park, down to the Police Station, around the Golf Course, and back to the lakefront - mostly off-road the whole way.
Embrace the spirit of Matariki by dressing as a star and adding lights to your bike - think fairy lights, glow sticks, or anything that sparkles! Or simply come as you are and enjoy the ride.
This is a free event, but registration is required to help us plan.
Everyone is welcome! Bring your bikes, your whānau, and your friends for a beautiful ride to mark the turning of the season. Dress warmly and make sure you have working rear and front bike lights!
Kids participating in the Bike 4 Books schools programme will earn double points for joining this event!
The route is approximately 9km and will take about 1 hour at a cruisy pace, followed by free hot chocolates at the Dinosaur Park. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Participants are responsible for themselves and their children, and by taking part in the event, they agree to the waiver outlined in the registration form.
