How to learn and teach maths with creativity and art

Teachers, tutors, parents/guardians and other educators — Join us at Haytch café in Thornbury for an afternoon of mathematics play, art and creativity ✨
- Connect: with other curious community members, learners and teachers
- Create: Spend time observing and/or creating mathematical ARTefacts using colour, pattern and creative mathematics principles
- Collaborate: Enjoy rich conversations and gain new insights about learning and doing mathematics
Embedded topics:
- Inclusive lessons and activities where everyone has mathematical ideas of value
- The mathematics in art, and the art in mathematics
- Repeating and growing patterns in number, shape and more
- Mathematical ideas that emerge from picture book art
- Visual mathematics, Creative mathematics & Social mathematics
Key details
This very special community event will run on Thursday 22 May. 4:30PM — 5:30PM. Participants are then invited to stay and enjoy refreshments and networking conversations.
Spaces are limited and registrations close 9PM Wednesday 21 May 2025.
You will be welcomed by...
Alex Box, Featured Presenter. Alex is an experienced primary teacher, learning specialist and maths tutor. As a formerly maths-anxious student herself, Alex brings important perspectives to conversations about maths teaching and learning. Alex mentors teachers and families, and consults to various organisations and schools. She is the Founder of Maths Play, a community research project providing maths outreach to families, teachers and schools.
