Event description

Matt Glover Masterclass - Preschool Focus Day

Nurturing Language Composition in Reading, Writing and Dramatic Play

This professional learning opportunity is now an online event!

We hope this will allow more of our colleagues to join Matt Glover and Lisa Burman on 20th June.

We will use Zoom as our platform. Each day will be divided into 4 shorter sections, with breaks in between. We don't want anyone sitting at a screen all day.

Agreements for online learning participants:

  • Download the (free) Zoom platform
  • Enable video function
  • Honour that nothing will be recorded and no screen shots taken
  • Use a lap top or desk top - not a phone
  • Each person is registered (no sharing of registrations)
  • Manage your own technology
  • Commit for the day - not just for a session

South Australia has formed a special relationship with Matt Glover since his first visit in 2017. The buzz in the room during each of his workshops is contagious and many of you talk about your experience when we meet you at your site or in our workshops. I also know many of you have gained so much inspiration from his books.

This online conference will have a Preschool focus, drawing on Matt's work in "Already Ready", "Engaging Young Writers" and "I Am Reading".

(This workshop will also have relevance for Reception/Foundation teachers, but the contexts explored will focus more on Kindergarten/Preschool. If you teach Foundation, you are more than welcome to participate.)

In Matt's words...

When children create books, they are composing language.  They also compose language when they read unfamiliar books and use the pictures, rather than the words to read the book.  When teachers are aware of how children are composing language in each area, they often notice that language is more sophisticated one area or the other.  In this workshop we will:

  • Examine how students compose language in writing
  • Examine how children compose language when reading unfamiliar books
  • How to use language complexity in one area to support and lift language in another area
  • Practice making instructional decisions that support language composition
