Event description

Matt Glover - Masterclass (Primary)

Genre Choice: Increasing Engagement in Writing

This is now an online event!

We hope this will allow more of our colleagues to join Matt Glover and Lisa Burman on June 13th 2020.

We will use Zoom as our platform. Each day will be divided into 4 shorter sections, with breaks in between. We don't want anyone sitting at a screen all day. We will begin at 8:30am Central Australian Time.

Agreements for online learning participants:

  • Download the (free) Zoom platform
  • Enable video function
  • Honour that nothing will be recorded and no screen shots taken
  • Use a lap top or desk top - not a phone
  • Each person is registered (no sharing of registrations)
  • Manage your own technology
  • Commit for the day - not just for a session

South Australia has formed a special relationship with Matt Glover since his first visit in 2017. The buzz in the room during each of his workshops is contagious and many of you talk about your experience when we meet you at your site or in our workshops. We also know many of you have gained so much inspiration from his books.

Genre Choice - Increasing Engagement in Writing

In Matt's words...

Choice, in any area of learning, increases energy and engagement. In writing teachers often grapple with choice of topic, but less frequently consider choice of genre. Yet, choice of genre significantly impacts engagement, especially for reluctant writers. In this workshop we will make the case for why choice of genre is crucial for writers.  We will then provide teachers with strategies and supports for including units of study that provide writers with choice of genre in their writing workshop.

Participants will

  • Understand how of choice of genre directly impacts student engagement.
  • Explore specific craft and process studies that provide students with choice of genre.
  • Learn how to create and use stacks of texts mentor texts for craft and process studies
  • Be able to use strategies to make conferring in craft and process studies more efficient and effective
  • Experience the process for designing a craft study and a process study, which allows teachers to make responsive decisions throughout the unit.
