The MBC is delighted to welcome back our members and guests to face-to-face events after Covid lockdowns. The MBC welcomes Gavin Hanrahan of Turnbull Hill Lawyers to speak about the difficulties businesses face when dealing with employment law. Gavin began his career in law when he joined Turnbull Hill Lawyers as a law clerk in 1990, becoming a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 1994. Since, Gavin’s practice has been focused on civil litigation, and employment law with a particular emphasis on acting for business owners. Gavin is the Managing Partner of Turnbull Hill Lawyers, a role he has performed for about 15 years. For many years business owners have laboured under the uncertainty of whether an employee is engaged as a casual or permanent part time. On 4 August 2021, the High Court handed down its decision in the landmark case of WorkPac v Rossato & Ors [2021] HCA 23. This decision provides much-needed guidance for business owners and employees. Gavin will explain the decision and provide guidance on how you should engage casual employees so as to not fall foul of the principles laid down in Workpac v Rossato. |
