MCA Visit – Not a Souvenir: Seeing Racism Through the Eyes of Indigenous Artist Tony Albert

Join Dr Bibi for a thought-provoking visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia to explore Not a Souvenir through the eyes of Indigenous artist Tony Albert.

Albert’s work draws attention to the racism and stereotyping embedded in objects and images depicting Indigenous Australians. By bringing together and reimagining these familiar objects, he challenges us to look beyond what may initially appear to be harmless souvenirs and consider the cultural assumptions and histories they represent.

Of particular interest to CFS is Albert’s reimagining of the work of Australian artist Margaret Preston, renowned for her still-life paintings of flowers. This connection invites us to look at familiar imagery in a new way and consider how art can challenge our assumptions about culture, identity and representation.

Dr Bibi invites participants to slow down, look closely at the visual exhibits and share their reflections:

What did you notice? What surprised you? Did anything challenge the way you see racism or representation?

This visit is an opportunity to explore how art can open conversations about difficult issues, encourage critical thinking and help us see the world through different perspectives.

Tickets:

Youth (12 - 18 yr) is FREE.

Any student (18 - 25 yr) with valid a student card is $20 (the ticket price for the exhibition)*,

General Admissions/Adults $35 (the ticket price for the exhibition) *

CFS will purchase tickets for participants after registration is confirmed.
