Means Testing for Aged Care Residents under the New Aged Care Act

This session is intended for admissions staff, and others who need an understanding of the fees and charges rules relating to people entering residential aged care.

It will explain how the means testing system determines the fees and charges applying to people entering care from 1 November 2025.

It will also cover aspects of the system which have not changed, serving as a refresher for staff familiar with the old system, as well as new staff needing a broad overview.

• What gets assessed

• How the family home is treated

• What is a “protected person”, and how that can change over time

• The potential fees payable and comparisons between the old and new systems

• Supported versus non-supported residents

• The interaction between aged care and the Age Pension

About the Presenter:

Paul Carberry is a consultant who helps people understand the fees and payments system as it applies to a family member entering residential aged care. Over the past six years he has helped hundreds of families understand and navigate this complex area.

From 2005 to 2016 Paul was the CEO of Leading Age Services Australia - SA. Prior to that he ran an accounting software business for 15 years and has also worked in various sales and marketing roles.

ACIA reserve the right to:

• Remove unauthorised participants from a session if no response is received by the unauthorised attendee within 10 minutes (by Zoom chat).

• Request all participants to turn on their camera

Notification of cancellation or transfer of registration must be by email to enquiry@acia.asn.au. No refund is available for any cancellations received five working days or less prior to the start date, however a substitute delegate is welcome. Please notify ACIA of any substitution as soon as possible. No refund or transfer will be given for non-attendance.
