MECLA BASIX Consultation Briefing

BASIX has engaged consultants to develop a Materials Index for BASIX (BASIX currently covers water, operational energy and thermal comfort). The proposed index will mean that all new dwellings in NSW will need to meet an embodied carbon reduction target, and it is anticipated that the target will be increased over time.

The consultants have been asked to seek input from MECLA members before undertaking a final presentation to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

Target audience: Anyone with knowledge of embodied carbon ratings for materials and buildings or stakeholders who will be affected by the addition of a Materials Index to BASIX.

BASIX would particularly like feedback on:

• The proposed embodied carbon calculation method
• Opportunities and barriers that BASIX should be aware of regarding embodied energy reduction and the circular economy
