Event description

Offered through 15 West, the newsroom initiative powered by Lucky Jefferson, this series of workshops is part of our larger mission to improve literacy through digital expression. We equip underrepresented residents in Cook County's west side neighborhoods with essential media skills to become confident, informed storytellers.

Participants will learn to decode misinformation, critically engage with media, and craft their own narratives through hands-on training in digital publishing and community journalism. Rooted in inclusivity and representation, this workshop transforms everyday residents into local reporters, using media as a tool for cultural participation, social equity, and civic empowerment.

Whether you're curious about telling a specific story or want to uplift the voices in your neighborhood, Media Literacy 101 is your first step from media consumer to changemaker.

Session 1: Foundations of Media Literacy What is media? Who creates it? Participants learn to identify bias, misinformation, and reliable sources. Learn from Rebecca Laws, of DePaul University's Student Urban Research Corps, and SOAR/Digital Navigator Corps member, Ashley Smith.
