Originating in Karangasem, Bali, Megibung is a traditional communal eating practice that fosters collective participation. The term "Megibung" is comprised of the word "gibung" and the prefix "me", highlighting the importance of shared activity. Essentially, Megibung revolves around sharing food and communal eating in a group setting.
This tradition originated in 1692, during the reign of I Gusti Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, as a means of promoting unity and esprit de corps among the king's soldiers during their campaign to conquer Lombok.
During a Megibung, participants gather in a circle and share a meal from a large platter, typically consisting of traditional Balinese cuisine, with specific customs to adhere to, including hand washing prior to eating, avoiding food spills, and remaining seated within the circle until all participants have completed their meal. Megibung is often held during religious ceremonies and community events, emphasizing the values of togetherness and mutual respect.
Taking part in a Megibung is an enriching experience that allows you to explore Balinese traditions and enjoy the generous hospitality of its community.
All food enthusiasts are welcome to partake in the unique Balinese cuisine experience. Tickets are available on sale until March 30, 2025, with limited seating.
