MEI Seminar #2: Gas markets and gas retailing
Event description
HYBRID EVENT
We invite you to the second seminar in our MEI Seminar Series for 2025, presented by Mr Matthew Clemow, Group Manager Gas Market and System Operations, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
The presentation will provide an overview of AEMO’s gas role and functions within Australia’s East Coast Gas System including the energy market regulatory framework and how the gas markets balance supply and demand. It will also cover the drivers for the gas supply shortfalls forecasted from winter 2028.
There are different gas market designs and supply mechanisms to meet the supply objectives of that market. AEMO’s largest gas market is in Victoria, where AEMO has the unique role of operating both the Victorian gas transmission system and the wholesale gas market.
AEMO has been responsible for managing gas supply adequacy for the East Coast Gas System since May 2023 following the gas supply challenges during winter 2022. Further reforms to increase AEMO’s role are being developed to respond to the forecast gas supply shortfalls.
