Melbourne Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra and Super Sax
Event description
A concert featuring The Melbourne University Jazz Orchestra and Super Sax.
For this afternoon’s concert, The Melbourne University Jazz Orchestra directed by Angela Davis will present the classic era of Big Band repertoire (1930-1970), including classics from Quincy Jones and Duke Ellington. The band has spent this semester dealing with stylistic nuance, swing, blend, balance and of course improvisation. It is especially designed to give the students a deeper knowledge of Jazz phrasing and articulation, as well as serving as an introduction into the world of improvising on simple jazz forms.
Super Sax is a group of 5 dedicated sax players with ‘chops to burn’, a mellow trumpeter and a rhythm section to keep up. First started as a Charlie Parker ‘tribute’ band in the 70’s, the LA alto sax player Med Flory arranged Charlie Parker solos for 5 saxs and rhythm and performed them regularly with the original Supersax. Other arrangers followed on and created a large repertoire for this ensemble. This concert focuses on tunes by some of the great sax player/composers, Bob Mintzer, Charlie Parker, Jerry Bergonzi, Tom Kubis, as well as the legendary keyboardists Clare Fisher and Michel Legrand.

PARKING
The City of Melbourne has recently changed the parking restrictions around the Southbank Campus. Parking control hours are now expanded to 7am–10pm, seven days per week, and are capped at three hours. A $2-per-hour fee after 7pm is also now in place. There is no change to the $4-per-hour peak rate between 7am–7pm. Parking inspectors are regularly in the area fining drivers who overstay their meter, so we encourage everyone to be aware and avoid an expensive fine. More information.
