Melbourne General Cemetery Tour 2024
Event description
THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO UNIVERSITY HOUSE MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS
Join Dr Michael Pickering on a fascinating tour of the Melbourne General Cemetery.Â
This guided walk will take you on a journey through some of the sepulchral gems of Melbourne General Cemetery, with an eye to the relationships between wealth, power and empire that they evoke and embody.
Dr. Michael Pickering wrote his Honours thesis on ghosts in seventeenth-century England (Queensland) followed by a PhD on the vampire debate in the eighteenth-century German-speaking world (Melbourne). His current research looks at the relationship between magic, heterodoxy and radical religiosity in the early German Enlightenment, with special emphasis on the ideas of the physician (and magician) Johann Nikolaus Martius. He currently heads-up Academic Programs at Trinity College and was until recently head of the History of Ideas department in the international division at Trinity.
Meet at University House at 5pm, and make your way on the tour shortly afterwards. The bar will be open, so feel free to fortify yourself pre-tour for a few pints!
