Event description

Menstrual Health Education and Wellbeing Workshop at Town of Gawler

Join the Town of Gawler for an evening of menstrual health and period poverty education. Eva Jakob is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Menstrual Health Educator for TABOO Period Products, Eva will lead you through engaging and interactive discussions on all things menstrual health, period poverty and hormonal health. The workshop will provide an explanation of hormones during the menstrual phases, understanding endocrine disruptors and the profound impact that stress can have on our hormones and how it creates a hormone imbalance.

The workshop will deep dive into the limited or inadequate access to menstrual products or menstrual health education as a result of financial constraints or negative socio-cultural stigmas associated with menstruation. Taboo will cover the importance of inclusive and accessible menstrual products and adequate menstrual health education. This workshop will explore the importance of understanding period poverty within your own community, school, corporate workplace and sporting clubs and what you can do to help eradicate period poverty within your community.

This event forms part of the Period Product Provision trial the Town of Gawler are currently running at the Gawler Civic Centre which has seen sanitary pads and tampons made freely available within the centre from 1 July 2024. Partnering with TABOO, the 12-month Trial gives community members who might find it difficult to access period products an option. Access to free period products can greatly enhance participation in school, work, and social activities, reduce health risks, and help break the cycle of shame and embarrassment associated with menstruation. This initiative is thanks to a $5,000 Period Justice Grant through the Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Small Grants Program and is a significant step toward achieving 'period justice'.
