Mental Disorders 101: An Explainer
Join Professor Viv Wuthrich for this introductory seminar to understand more about the science of common mental disorders. The session will cover key concepts such as what are anxiety and mood disorders, what causes them, how do you know if you have one, and most importantly what can be done to treat these disorders.
You will learn to recognise common signs, explore practical strategies for support, and gain insights into promoting mental wellbeing for yourself and others. Whether you're a student, professional, or simply curious, this session offers a clear and accessible foundation for understanding the science of mental disorders.
Professor Viviana Wuthrich is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the School of Psychological Sciences, Macquarie University, and currently holds a Medical Research Future Fund Emerging Leadership Fellowship. She is the Director of the Macquarie University Lifespan Health & Wellbeing Research Centre. Prof Wuthrich's research interests relate broadly to understanding and treating mental disorders across the lifespan. She is particularly interested in understanding the psychological mechanisms underlying anxiety and depression (and related disorders), the symptoms of, and treatment of depression and anxiety across the lifespan. She has developed a number of psychological interventions for children, adolescents and older adults through randomised controlled trials, and disseminated these into practice.
