Merida Studio Tour
Event description
Join the New England chapter of the ICAA, an exclusive tour of Merdia Studio. Merida Studio is an artist workshop and residency specializing in textile art. Founded on the principles of savoir-faire, the studio collaborates with contemporary artists to create unique site-specific works. Merida Studio strives to extend the chain of textile art and its rich history. Director Catherine Connolly and Artist in Residence, Sylvie Johnson will be our host. A lunch will follow the tour.
CATHERINE CONNOLLY
Director
Catherine Connolly is dedicated to uplifting textile art. In 2017, she made the decision to transform a family rug business in Fall River, Massachusetts, into a contemporary artist workshop, Merida Studio. As the director, she seeks to create the space for the artists and craftspeople at Merida to find meaning and beauty in their work. By focusing on textile art, the studio explores ideas that transcend time and provide works that will be treasured for generations.
SYLVIE JOHNSON
Artist in Residence
Sylvie Johnson joined Connolly at Merida Studio as an artist-in-residence in 2017 and now works closely with Merida Studio’s team to create her Atelier pieces. Johnson’s purpose is to explore the mystery and complexity of yarn through shadows. Each year, she introduces a new body of thirty-six distinct works created in unique limited editions. The pieces are explicitly dyed and scaled for site-specific spaces under her artistic vision.
