Merri Merri Fungi Walk
Event description
Come for a walk on the creek! Learn about the ecological function, beauty and diversity of the local fungi we find with mycologist and educator Melvin Xu.
Very little is known about Australian native fungi. Only 5% percent of the estimated 250,000 species have been described.
We’ll learn how to share what we find with citizen science projects in a way that will help identification and deepen our knowledge of the vast world of local fungi.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can walk & get wet in - fungi loves the damp! We will be walking on uneven ground.
Welcoming all ages, children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
Melvin Xu is an environmental educator, citizen scientist and mycologist. Working closely with cryptic zombie fungus at University of Melbourne, propagating orchids fungi with Orchid societies, Coordinating the Field naturalist club of Victoria's fungi group and Vice president of MYCommunity applied mycology operating at the intersection of new technologies and citizen scientist.
