Event description

Guitarist Michael J Brady weaves melodies between the guitar, double bass, and drum set. With drummer Ryu Kodama and bassist Oscar Peterson, the trio explores the beautiful corners of each instrument through dynamic builds and effects. Brady draws influence widely from guitarists-guitarists like Julian Lage and Tony Rice, and Australian Jazz artists like Alister Spence and Sandy Evans. The trio have toured Australia’s east coast, and performed alongside artists such as Evans, Stella Anning (MEL), Flora Carbo (VIC), and Sasha Gavlek (TAS).

This March the Michael J Brady trio are kicking off a 10 date national tour to support the release of their new single Bouquet. Catch the trio in at the Drill Hall Gallery with an opening set from the The Ueber Gang.

Michael J Brady (SYD)
Michael J Brady is a musical chameleon based in Gadigal Land, Sydney. He has an eclectic background in contemporary jazz, experimental improvisation, and indie rock. Leading the Michael J Brady Trio, he has developed a reputation for dynamically charged performances born out of infectious ensemble interaction that explores the range of textures possible in the trio setting. In 2023 he released his debut record Brady//Donkin//Phipps featuring the group's original lineup. Since bringing in Ryu Kodama and Oscar Peterson in 2023, the group has extensively toured Eastern Australia, and travelled to Banff Canada, and Siena Italy.

The Ueber Gang (ACT)
The Ueber Gang is a vibrant, young jazz trio comprising electric guitar (Liv Uebergang), double bass (Harrison Whalan) and drums (Sean Kirk). With influences ranging from greats such as Mike Stern, Pat Metheny to Kurt Rosenwinkel, they delight in creating modern arrangements on traditional jazz standards. Originally meeting through ANU’s School of Music, they played together in different forms for a number of years in Canberra before officially collaborating as a trio in 2023. Most notably they hold a month residency at Gang Gang Café, but are also regulars at many other venues such a Blackbird Bar, Hippo Co and Dickson Taphouse.
