MICROFOREST MAKER TRAINING FOR COMMUNITY LEADERS - Grow your confidence in this 8 week online course
Event description
Have you ever looked at a bare block in your suburb and wondered if it could be somehow better? Have you always thought that planting trees with community was a neat idea but didn't know how? Does climate change freak you out but you feel helpless to do anything about it?
During COVID we worked with ACT and NSW communities to build four microforests of 1500 native plants along with water harvesting in public spaces with a fifth to be built in Queanbeyan in 2024. In 2023 two of our microforests featured on ABC's Gardening Australia.
You don’t need to be an expert to start a microforest. With our training, resources and support we give you the confidence to build a microforest that benefits the planet, fosters wellbeing and causes a stir. Imagine if we could plant a microforest in every urban hotspot in Australia!
This 8 week online course is designed for the beginner. No experience required. Just grit and determination, a readiness to listen to others and desire to make the world a better place.
Each online class runs for around one hour and we will record all sessions and make them available for you afterwards.
A blueprint for success
We’ve created a repeatable BLUEPRINT for success and divided the microforest making process into eight achievable steps. We will team you with a mentor who has been involved in making one of our microforests. And we will provide advice at every step on the experts you need to employ.
We will cover the following eight steps to build a climate-cooling, life-giving microforest in your community.
1. Introductions, the Miyawaki and The Climate Factory method, our forests and how to form a leadership team
2. The microforest budget, crafting a crowdfunding campaign and raising other money (grants, business donations of materials)
3. Stakeholder consultation and meet your mentor
4. Climate futures, landscape design, plant selection and plant orders, earthworks and water harvesting design
5. The approvals process – landscape plans, risk assessments, plant lists, timelines
6. Construction
7. Planting with stakeholders
8. Maintenance and community bonding
