Event description

Come and learn about the history of Italian micromosaic glass art, and create a beautiful micromosaic glass pendant yourself. Micromosaics became popular around the end of the 18th century, and peaked during the 19th century, as a unique piece of handmade jewellery to take home as a souvenir from your "Grand Tour" around Europe. The artistry mostly centred around Rome, and from the Vatican workshops in particular! We will be looking at the stunning handmade/hand-coloured smalti glass from Orsoni in Venice, and how the glass strings (filati) are made from these small glass bricks. The glass strings are then cut into 2mm long pieces, and stood vertically in a putty-like substance. As you add more glass, a picture begins to reveal itself. It is such a delicate, beautiful and rare art. I will also have some pieces of antique micromosaic jewellery for you to enjoy and for inspiration. Magnifying desk lamps are provided, along with everything you require to create your pendant. We will also share a drink and a lovely cheese platter. I can't wait to get you hooked on micromosaic jewellery making!
