With the Strait of Hormuz now a flashpoint in the US/Israel-Iran conflict, global energy markets face unprecedented disruption. What does this mean for Australia's energy security and the resilience of critical supply chains?

This panel brings together leading experts on Gulf energy, global maritime security, Chinese energy markets, Australia's renewable energy

transition, and agricultural and critical mineral supply chains to assess near- and medium-term risks. The panel will consider options available to both Australian policymakers and the public.

Panelists:

Dr Jessie Moritz Senior Lecturer at ANU’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies.

Dr Moritz is an expert on the political economy of energy and security in the Arabian Peninsula.

Katie Ricketts Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO.

Katie Ricketts is an applied economist specialising in food systems, sustainable agricultural transformation, and the resilience of agricultural input supply chains in the face of global uncertainty.

Professor John Mavrogenes Professor of Economic Geology at ANU’s Research School of Earth Sciences.

Professor Mavrogenes is a leading expert on the formation and discovery of ore deposits, including the rare earth elements and critical minerals essential to the clean energy transition.

Dr Fiona Beck Honorary Associate Professor at ANU’s School of Engineering.

Dr Beck’s work combines engineering, policy, and techno-economics to analyse the global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Dr Jorrit Gosens Fellow, Centre for Climate and Energy Policy at ANU’s Crawford School of Public Policy.

Dr Gosens specialises in modelling energy and resource markets during decarbonisation, including a particular focus on Chinese renewable energy industries and Australia-China trade.

Admiral (Ret.) Chris Barrie Honorary Professor, Strategic and Defence Studies Centre ANU

Professor Admiral Barrie served for 42 years in the RAN, including four years as Chief of the Defence Force. In 2021 he helped to found the Australian Security Leaders Climate Group (ASLCG), where he continues to advocate for leadership and action on the human, domestic and international implications of climate change.
