Miindala Bellingen Death Cafe - Oct 2026
Description
Let’s talk about life, by talking about death.
Join us for a relaxed, open-hearted gathering at the Death Café in Bellingen! This is a welcoming space where we can explore death-related topics freely, over coffee, tea, and cake.
Death Café is a supportive, participant-led space where we help facilitate conversations on different topics around death. Whether you're grieving a loved one, curious about end-of-life planning, the concept of mortality or simply want to open up a meaningful discussion, everyone is welcome.
Come as you are. No agenda, no judgment—just good conversation and a chance to connect.
We’ll provide the tea and treats, you only need to bring your thoughts and curiosity!

From an article on The Death Network:
“One of the most beautiful things about a Death Café is its inclusivity. People from all walks of life attend, bringing with them different perspectives, experiences, and questions about mortality. Whether you’ve lost a loved one, are facing a terminal illness, or are simply curious about what it means to live knowing that death is inevitable, you’ll find a welcoming space where your thoughts and feelings are honoured.”

Miindala – means "doing things well" – and reflects on our commitment to honouring the traditions, wisdom, and connection to land that the Gumbaynggirr people have nurtured for thousands of years.
We acknowledge that this event is taking place on the lands of the Gumbaynggirr people. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present. We honour their ongoing connection to this land, its waterways, and its culture.
FAQs
- What can I expect at a Death Cafe?
Death Cafe is a participant-led conversation space.
At the beginning of each Death Cafe, we will all meet as one group. A facilitating Miindala volunteer will greet the group, and explain the way things will work.
We will then break off in to smaller groups for discussion (along with tea, coffee & cake) - there will be at least one Miindala volunteer with each group.
Towards the end of our time at the Death Cafe we will meet again as one group to conclude the session, and there will be the invitation for anyone who'd like to briefly share with the group, if time allows.
Some folks come to Death Cafe to share & listen, and others may come just to listen - whichever category you fall in to is okay! - Where does 'Death Cafe' come from?
The concept of the Death Café originated with Swiss sociologist and anthropologist Bernard Crettaz, who organised the first café mortel in 2004. Inspired by Crettaz's work, the movement grew further when Jon Underwood began organising these gatherings in the UK in 2011. Today, Death Cafés are held globally as scheduled, non-profit events to talk about the one thing we all share: death.
- Do I need to bring anything?
We provide tea, cake & coffee for all attendees.
- What is Miindala?
Miindala is a volunteer-led organisation based in Bellingen, creating spaces for community education, connection, and care in relation to grief & loss.
We support individuals and groups emotionally and spiritually through dying and bereavement.
Grounded in inclusivity, we are non-denominational, life-affirming, and provide a calm, non-judgemental presence during times of loss, death, and emotional upheaval.
At our heart, Miindala is about remembering that no one should have to face death or grief alone, and that healing happens in relationship, in ritual and in community.
