Millinery Foundations Masterclass with Sarah Seahorse

Join milliner and wearable artist Sarah Seahorse for this action packed weekend masterclass using non-traditional and easily accessible materials. 

Learn useful millinery and costume making techniques such as flat pattern making, blocking, wirework, decorative embellishment and finishing to create your own sturdy and functional headwear. Sarah will also provide advice and mentoring to realise your dream headwear visions. 

 Suitable for anyone interested in millinery, design, drag, costume and sculpture, participants will learn the fundamentals of creating DIY millinery bases and structure. 

With a focus on utilising recycled materials, accessing millinery materials on a budget and reimagining rubbish, let your imagination run wild to create multiple headdress concepts.

Sarah was the resident milliner at Circus Oz for a decade, she has won two awards at the prestigious World of Wearable Art Awards in Aotearoa,  has made hats and costumes for many of Naarm’s incredible performers, is a self described trash troll, lover of hats and recycled materials and loves to generously share her lifetime of creative skills within community settings.

• Millinery design principles
• DIY Blocking from scratch
• Flat pattern skull cap with recycled materials. 
• Wirework
• Decorative techniques + materials manipulation
• Problem solving
• Going up- height and balance
• Finishing and Lining

By the end of the weekend you will have three new headdress bases to build on, plus loads of new skills and ideas.

This class will be held at the beautiful Jika Jika Community Centre in Northcote.

The space is wheelchair accessible.

There is a beautiful outdoor area to sit and chill, rest or dream up new ideas.
