Mimesis at the Movies: Pray the Devil Back to Hell

You don't have to stick around for the business stuff, if you only want to talk about Leymah Gbowee. Nor do you have to talk about Liberian civil wars for an hour and a half, if you only want to discuss Theology & Peace planning.

In 2011, Leymah Gbowee would receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her work as a leader of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. Three years earlier (2008), Gini Reticker directed a documentary film about Gbowee's efforts. Join Theology & Peace as we examine this account of building peace while surrounded by war. Hopefully, you'll have a chance to watch the film before we meet. You can rent it for less that $6 USD from at least five different video-on-demand services.

The vast majority of the footage and testimony focuses on retelling the actions which built peace. However, there are also images of child soldiers, audio of gun shots, and descriptions of sexual violence. You might prefer to learn about this story through an interview Gbowee and the film's producer gave Lynn Sherr on Bill Moyers Journal in 2009.
