Mimesis at the Movies: Strictly Ballroom
"Dance to Win" 🫤
Before there was Moulin Rouge!... before Romeo + Juliet... Baz Luhrmann gave the world a musical entitled Strictly Ballroom that was later adapted for the screen. Come join Theology & Peace as we explore how a singular performance can transform an entire population.
Scott is an unquestionably talented ballroom dancing scion with a real chance to win the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Amateur 5-Dance Latin American Championship. Like all competitors, he has opponents to face. However, for Scott, the real trial is grappling with all the expectations. After a stylistically stellar but poorly judged performance in the Southern Districts Waratah Championships, Scott finds himself under immense social pressure to attain the highest level of perfection. While everyone is convinced of his technical skill, only the awkward and undesirable Fran sees his full potential.
