Min Jibalina: Resistance From Algeria's Mountains to the Masses

Join ELDV and SPFY on Algeria’s Independence Day to mark 64 years of freedom, and reflect on the enduring cost of liberation and the long arc of decolonial struggle.

The land of a million and a half martyrs bears a history forged through 132 years of resistance to French colonial occupation, where liberation was achieved through generations of sacrifice. On July 5th, 1962, Algeria’s revolution became a defining moment in global anti-colonial struggle, shaping movements for dignity and self-determination far beyond its borders. That legacy endures today in the continued struggles of peoples resisting dispossession and occupation around the world.

The evening will feature:

• Together, we will trace how the Algerian struggle succeeded and consider what it means to sustain decolonial resistance in the present.

• A teach-in on Algeria’s decolonial history and a community discussion.

• A gallery exhibit engaging themes of resistance, memory, and culture. This gallery will stay open during the teach-in.

• Food and drinks!

• We also want to encourage attendees to wear their own traditional clothing AND help us fill the Toronto Community Fridges by bringing non-perishable food items!

All ticket proceeds as well as a portion of items for sale will go directly towards supporting those on the ground in Palestine and Sudan.
