Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and the Mind Medicine Australia Professional Development program: approaches to therapy from preparation to integration and more information about the Course we are designing + Q & A

It will explore the topic of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. It will cover the process of therapy, who receives it, who delivers it and what participants report about it. We will be sharing information about how the therapy is set up, and how psychotherapists are trained. This will also be an opportunity to hear more about what MMA is offering – a 2-day introductory Workshop in Psychedelic Therapies prior to their Summit in November, and the Psychedelic-assisted Psychotherapy Professional Development Program which is being developed for roll-out in 2021.

There will also be information about a newly created psychotherapy service and a professional network which psychotherapists and psychologists already working in this field are invited to join.

Following the presentation there will be a Q & A panel with Peter Hunt AM, Tania de Jong AM and Melissa Warner. This will be an opportunity to engage in a discussion about psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies for mental illness broadly, and what Mind Medicine Australia and other local organisations are doing here in Australia.

Psychedelic-assisted treatments offer enormous potential in providing a meaningful alternative to current treatments for mental illness. PTSD is a debilitating condition that affects tens of millions of people worldwide, with many more trauma victims diagnosed with comorbid conditions such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders. In recent clinical trials, MDMA has been shown to produce reliable clinical improvements, restoring patient safety and self-agency even for individuals who have suffered with PTSD for many years, and for whom many treatments have failed.

The wave of clinical psychedelic research and regulatory support is rapidly building, with experts forecasting the availability of psychedelic-assisted treatments in the US and EU within the next 2 to 5 years, subject to positive clinical outcomes in large trials that are currently underway.

Alana Roy
Ph. D Psychology, B. A Social Work (MHSW)

Dr Alana Roy is a psychologist, social worker and therapist with a background in mental health, suicide prevention, trauma and abuse. Alana works at several universities as a Research Fellow and supervisor of students on placement. She is dedicated to psychedelic assisted psychotherapy and plant medicines. She has engaged with, and provides integration therapeutic support services for communities across Australia. Alana passionately advocates for public policy, community education and legislative changes so that these treatments are regulated and supported by a skilled sector.

Renee Harvey
M.A. in Clinical Psychology
Clinical Psychologist and Manager of Psychedelic Therapy Development Program, Mind Medicine Australia

Renee is a Clinical Psychologist and has had a long career in the UK as a Consultant in the NHS and more recently as an Honorary Research Fellow at Imperial College London in the study of psilocybin for treatment resistant depression. She has been responsible for leading in service development for people with complex emotional needs across Sussex (UK), establishing three specialist services, including staff appointments, training and supervision, and in clinical delivery in these services. She established various training courses and treatment programmes during this time, and regularly delivered lectures and courses at various levels. Renee specialised in training clinicians in skills for working with individuals with complex needs across the UK as well as internationally, including Europe, and Japan. Renee was also a key member of developing psychedelic interest groups in Brighton, and in establishing and running a psychedelic Integration Circle in Brighton UK.
