What is mindfulness?

At its most basic, mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment. In a mindful state we try to approach each moment without judgment, and do our best to stay engaged with our experience, rather than allowing our minds to wander here and there. Any activity can be done mindfully.

What is mindful art? Do I have to be an artist to participate?

Mindful art is done with the intention of enjoying the experience, rather than worrying about what the finished product looks like. We often will incorporate our five senses, noticing the sound of pencil on paper, paying attention to different colours or patterns, or enjoying the feeling of pushing paint around with a brush. The art activities we do in this group will be quite simple, and no previous art experience is necessary. A lot of our work may feel like doodling or "just playing" with the materials, so our job is to trust the process, give ourselves permission to slow down, and practice staying present and relaxed in the moment.

What is the group structure?

Each week we will begin with a brief check in where participants may wish to share a small bit about their day or week. We will then move into the art process. The group facilitator will introduce an art technique, topic, or project for participants to try. Participants are welcome to modify the project to best suit their own needs. At the end of artmaking time, participants will be invited to share their work if they would like to, as well as sharing any reflections about the artmaking process itself.

Although participants are welcome to chat with each other during group, this is not a talk therapy or processing group. The group facilitator will redirect focus to the artwork as needed. The art itself is the therapeutic part of the group, for participants to practice staying in the moment and enjoy the creative process.

Tell me about safety and confidentiality.

At the start of each group we will review a few guidelines to ensure safety. These guidelines will include non-judgment of others, practicing confidentiality of what is said and what is made in group, and being mindful of anything that could be triggering to others. The facilitator will support everyone throughout the group to use all art materials safely, and there will be a second SASS counsellor attending all sessions to provide additional support.
