Description

MINGUS BY THE BROOK

A fiery celebration of the music of Charles Mingus

Evergreen Music's 'Tea By The Brook' series returns with the mighty 'Mingus Amongst Us', a nine-piece powerhouse ensemble celebrating the extraordinary music of legendary bassist, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus.

Mingus brought a fire and energy to jazz unlike almost anyone before him. His music was deeply rooted in swing, blues and gospel, while remaining fiercely modern, adventurous and unpredictable.

Led by Sydney baritone saxophonist and arranger Steve Fitzmaurice, Mingus Amongst Us brings that music roaring back to life through Steve's arrangements for a nine-piece ensemble. Rather than simply recreating the records, the band captures the spirit of Mingus with big ensemble playing, incredible musicianship, spontaneity, humour and plenty of fire.

Assembling 'By The Brook' is a formidable line-up:
Ray Cassar — Trumpet
Sandy Evans — Tenor Saxophone
David Theak — Alto Saxophone
Steve Fitzmaurice — Baritone Saxophone
Dan Barnett — Trombone / Vocals
Alex Silver — Trombone
Michael Azzopardi — Piano
Hannah James — Bass
Paul Derricott — Drums

Between them is an enormous amount of Australian jazz history with some of the country's most respected players, bandleaders, composers and improvisers. A supergroup all packed onto one stage to tackle the music of a true jazz giant!

“It’s raucous, just as Mingus would have liked it!”
— Jessica Nicholas, ABC Jazz

“Earthy, passionate and sophisticated, blues and gospel inspired jazz.”
— Roger Mitchell, AusJazz

Evergreen Music has been quietly building one of Sydney’s most unique live music communities for over 15 years. What started as a music school has grown into a curated hub for performance, collaboration, and connection, bringing together some of the country’s most exciting musicians in an intimate, listening-first environment.

Evergreen's 'Tea By The Brook' (and now PARTY By The Brook) series has become a favourite for artists and audiences alike. Think house-party energy, but with world-class sound and a room full of people who are actually there to listen. These shows strip things back to what matters. Songs, stories, and shared moments between artists and a crowd that gets it.

Evergreen work closely with some of Australia’s leading musicians, as well as touring artists passing through, offering a space where music can be experienced up close and without distraction. No big stages, no barriers, just a genuine connection between performer and audience.

At the heart of everything we do is education. Evergreen is still a teaching space, and that spirit runs through every event. We believe in nurturing a lifelong love of music, supporting artists at all stages, and creating opportunities for the next generation to be inspired by the real thing.

Whether it’s a seated listening room or a standing, late-night session, Evergreen gigs are about atmosphere, community, and great music in its purest form.
