Mini Catrina Papier-Mâché Workshop with Ana Elisa Romo 💀🌼🦋

Celebrate the creativity and traditions of Día de Muertos with a hands-on, two-day papier-mâché workshop at the Matías Romero Creative Lab, presented by the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C.

Led by Mexican artist Ana Elisa Romo, this workshop invites participants to explore the art of cartonería, a traditional Mexican craft, while creating their very own 12-inch (30 cm) Catrina. Inspired by the iconic figures associated with Día de Muertos, you’ll have the opportunity to bring your Catrina to life with your own artistic touches.

Dates: Monday, October 26, and Wednesday, October 28, 2026
Time: 6:00–8:00 PM each day

All workshop materials are included in the registration fee, except for decorative ornaments.

Please Note: This is a two-day workshop. Participants should plan to attend both sessions to complete their Catrina.

MISSION

The Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington, D.C. is committed to enriching the relationship between Mexico and the United States by sharing Mexico’s vibrant cultural past and present with the local community. Since its establishment in 1990, the Institute has succeeded in presenting diverse, ongoing cultural programs and has become a thriving artistic center in the heart of Washington. Over the past three decades, the Institute has developed cultural programming in partnership with many institutions in the nation’s capital, including the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress.

A new phase at the Institute features the following focal points for development:

Mexico as a plural, diverse, and creative culture
Artistic dialogue between Mexico and the United States
Education for the arts

The Mexican Cultural Institute is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that relies on private, corporate, and foundation support to fulfill its mission.

OUTREACH

We have extended invitations to students from around the Washington Metropolitan area through a restructured Outreach program. We welcome our younger audiences to the Institute to learn about the vibrancy of Mexican Culture and develop a deeper cultural awareness. Guided Tours are available, free of charge.
