Good Governance Standards with Cathy Kleeman

What does good governance look like in the local church? How can we ensure that our policies, processes, and practices are both God-honouring and consistent with our legal and legislative obligations?

Session 2

Good Governance Structures with Michael Vanderree and David Ratten

How should a local church organise itself for effective leadership and decision-making? Clearly defining the roles of Boards, Ministers, Office-bearers, and congregations can set a church up for effective mission and ministry.

Speaker Bios:

Cathy Kleemann

Cathy is an accountant, pastor, elder, educator and Jesus follower. As Dean of the School of Leadership at ACOM, she teaches in areas of governance, accounting, leadership, and the Restoration Movement drawing on her experience as an accountant, church planter, pastor and Not for Profit CEO. As an elder, she participates in the ministry and governance/leadership at Pendle Hill Church of Christ. And as a wife and mum, she lives in Bilpin with her husband, Dieter, and their two young adult boys.

Michael Vanderree

Michael Vanderree has been part of the CCVT staff team for the last 13 years, where the focus of his role has been on church health and vitality. Michael currently serves as the Communities team Leader with CCVT. This includes many aspects of church life from developing sustainable practices, effective mission, navigating ministry transitions and developing healthy leadership and governance culture.

Prior to joining the CCVT team, he has served 4 churches, in pastoral leadership roles together with his wife Joanne, over 28 years in the Christian Reformed Churches of Australia.

Michael and Joanne have three married adult children, and five grandchildren. In his down time, you’ll find Michael firing up the pizza oven for family and friends, reading a book, riding a bike, enjoying a movie or series, doing some garden work, or contemplating the next place to explore.

David Ratten

David Ratten is currently a Community Mission Catalyst with CCVT. This role sees him working with local churches, helping them to be effective in mission and ministry. David was previously Senior Minister at One Church, Blackburn for 23 years. During this time, he was involved in a major governance restructure that helped set up the church for growth and effectiveness. He is married to Julie, and they have 6 children and 14 grandchildren.
