Event description

Miscellania presents an Naarm-exclusive live show for most original and critically lauded voices in electronic music, Shackleton.

Sam Shackleton was born in Lancashire in England and is currently based in Berlin. After spending his teenage years listening to punk and noise, by the early 2000s he was part of the scene around London club FWD>>, ground zero of the early dubstep scene. Alongside fellow producer Appleblim, he founded the short lived but highly influential dance music label Skull Disco, whose punk ethos and dark humour brought a new complexity and depth to post-millennial British dance music.

Shackleton's work as a producer has sat him at the vanguard of experimental bass music for over two decades. His work has continually evolved, with highlights including 'Three EPs' (2007, Perlon); mystic dubstep experiments alongside Appleblim on their imprint Skull Disco; the titanic and labyrinthine 'Music For The Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ EPs' (2012, Woe to the Septic Heart!); ritual music for the new millennium with vocalist Ernesto Tomasini on 'Devotional Songs' (2016, Honest Jon's Records); immersive, psychedelic bhajans with Siddhartha Belmannu and Waclaw Zimpel on The Cell of Dreams (7k!, 2023); polyrhythmic dub excursions with Holy Tongue in The Tumbling Psychic Joy of Now (AD93, 2024); and direct drum missives with Scotch Rolex and Omutaba in The Ill Hands of Doom (Nyege Nyege Tapes, 2024). The Shackleton sound universe is consistently defined by conceptual and spiritual themes, visions of inner space, apocalypse, dread, and a harmony between the organic and otherworldly.

Shackleton's live sets are driving, energetic, dense, and atmospheric, composed of material drawn from across his catalogue, re-arranged into new forms for the dance.

Supported by the live trio ofJoshua Wells, Karina Utomo, & R. Rebeiro; peak-time selections from bass scholar Emelyne; and an opening DJ/live hybrid set of drums, decks, and FX from Anuraag.

Tickets will sell out for this one.
