This special kick off event includes a pre-show workshop for all ages/levels led by renowned klezmer accordionist Christina Crowder, plus yiddish dance leading during the opening set!

The Lori Goldston Klezmer Trio
Cellist Lori Golston is known for making music at the cutting edge for over 30 years with artists like Cat Power, Terry Riley, David Byrne and more. Now, she is bringing her original voice into a first meeting and musical conversation with two stalwarts of the international klezmer scene, accordionist Christina Crowder and trombonist Dan Blacksberg. Focusing on the string-forward klezmer repertoire from older sources like the Beregovsky collection, this trio will set off on an open-ended journey with these classic melodies. Imagining the music as a kind of time travel, the trio will send their considerable individual and collective musical skills of the present back into these tunes from the past to see what unintended butterfly effects and exciting chain reactions result!
Lori Goldston
Classically trained and rigorously de-trained, possessor of a restless, semi-feral spirit, Lori Goldston is a cellist, composer, improviser, producer, writer and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic, is full, textured, committed and original. A relentless inquirer, her work drifts freely across borders that separate genre, discipline, time and geography.

Christina Crowder
Christina Crowder has been performing and researching Jewish music for thirty years, beginning in Budapest, Hungary in 1993 as a founding member of Di Naye Kapelye, and continuing with a Fulbright grant to Romania to document Jewish music in 1999, and since 2002 with an active research, teaching, and performing career in the US. She is Executive Director of the Klezmer Institute, which has been awarded three NEH Grants for Institute projects (2021-2025). Christina lives in New Haven, Connecticut, and performs with “Zamlers” (collectors) ensembles around the country. She has been a guest instructor in klezmer accordion and ensemble performance in the US, Canada, and Europe, and was both musical director and performer in the 2019 Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the 2020 ART Portland productions of the Broadway play “Indecent.” With the Klezmer Institute, Christina edited the Levitt Legacy music folio, is curating a player folio of KMDMP music, and has led KMDMP artist residency programs in Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, France, and Belgium.

Dan Blacksberg
Dan Blacksberg is a leading voice in Philadelphia's music community and a living master of klezmer trombone. Through performance, composition, and improvisation, he creates new territories to explore inside and across genres, forging new pathways between tradition and innovation. As a teacher and community music leader, he builds up all generations of musicians to become empowered and joyous rabble-rousers. As a teacher and culture bearer of klezmer trombone, Dan has been recognized as a Master Artist by the Canada Arts Council (2022). He has been on faculty at Temple University, Klezkanada, KlezKamp, and was an organizer of Yiddish New York. His students in trombone and improvisation can be found in leading roles across Philadelphia’s jazz, hip-hop, world music, and experimental music scenes.

Zimyl & The Philly Shmeerkatz
The newest klezmer group to take the Philadelphia scene pays homage to the city’s unique tradition of shmeer, klezmer, and camaraderie. Enveloping Philly’s own klezmer canon with tunes carried across oceans and lands, Zimyl & The Philly Shmeerkatz draw from their collective engagement in the international klezmer community. The band collaborates beyond the aims of cultural continuity to activate diasporic originality. Just like that delicious spread that makes your bagels come alive, this group will delight your senses – and your kishkes!
Featuring: Zimyl Klatkzer-Adler (clarinet); Elliot Beck (percussion, tsimbl); Joni Sidartha Leibovic (accordion); David Litwin (upright bass); Daniel Stern (trumpet, fiddle); and Cara Tratner (alto saxophone).

Playing Kiselgof 2026: Exploring New Repertoire from the Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Corpus
Led by Christina Crowder
A chance encounter in Tokyo a few years ago led to the unlikely release of thousands of unique musical manuscripts in a Kyiv archive previously unavailable to contemporary klezmer musicians and scholars. The Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript Project is an international digital humanities project connecting musicians today with the musical life of working klezmer musicians from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. This workshop will introduce some of the most popular tunes to emerge from the corpus and will be a chance to explore klezmer music that has a different vibe from the American klezmer most of us are familiar with.
Tunes will be taught primarily by ear, but sheet music will be available for those who would feel more comfortable using it during the session, and for anyone who likes to take home. All ages and instruments welcome.

The East Falls Train Station is a short walk from the Fallser Club. Parking in East Falls is no problem! There is ample free on-street parking near the East Falls train station driveway at 3610 Midvale Ave and a paid municipal lot three blocks away at 4100 Ridge Ave. Midvale Ave and Ridge Ave are both well-lit!
